Barotraumatic blowout fracture of the orbit after sneezing: Cone beam CT demonstration.

2018

A 40-year-old man with no history of trauma or previous sinus surgery complained sudden right diplopia after vigorous sneezing. The patient was submitted elsewhere to a MRI study for persisting diplopia, with inconclusive findings. One week later the patient was submitted to a maxillofacial cone beam CT (CBCT) in our Institution. A blowout fracture of the right orbital floor and lateral orbital wall with an intact orbital rim and a ipsilateral maxillary sinus effusion with an air liquid level, were detected at the CBCT study. Our conclusion, confirmed by the clinician, was the patient had a barotraumatic, isolated, pure blowout fracture of the right orbit consequence of the episode of vigor…

Optic nerve decompression in trauma and tumor patients

1999

Optic nerve decompression is a procedure that is now receiving increasing clinical attention. However, there are currently no standardized treatment protocols in the therapy of traumatic or pressure insults to the nerve. The present retrospective study was designed to report our experience with microscopic endonasal transethmoid-sphenoid optic nerve decompression in 24 unilateral trauma cases and 11 unilateral skull base tumor patients. In general preoperative visual acuities in the trauma patients were worse than in the tumor patients. Following surgery, 9 of 11 tumor patients (82%) had at least some improvement of their vision, including 5 complete recoveries. In the group with traumatic …

Post-traumatic lethal carotid-cavernous fistula.

2006

The authors report about an unexpected death by traumatic lesion of the internal carotid artery in a 30-year-old man who had fallen two metres. The man suffered a fracture of the left maxillary sinus and a fracture of the right orbit with bilateral haemorrhage of the maxillary sinus. Surgical treatment was performed with favorable outcome. Clinically, there were no neurological symptoms but about 60 days after his accident, the man died from uncontrolled epistaxis. He was submitted to the autopsy that show a linear fracture in the left side of the turcic sella and lesion of the left internal carotid artery with carotid-cavernous fistula.

The isolated orbital floor fracture from a transconjunctival or subciliary perspective-A standardized anthropometric evaluation

2015

Background The influence of orbital fractures and their repair on the rate of deformities of the lower eyelid is an ongoing source of discussion in the literature. Most of the present studies include isolated blowout as well as combined orbital fractures. Material and Methods We present a retrospective evaluation of a series of 100 patients after isolated blowout fracture repair using reference anthropometric data on standardized photographs. Analysis included eye fissure width and height, lid sulcus height, upper lid height, upper and lower iris coverage, position of cornea to palpebra inferior, canthal tilt, scleral show, ectropion and entropion. It was clearly distinguished between opera…

Customised products for orbital wall reconstruction: a systematic review

2021

Abstract The purpose of this systematic review was to critically analyze the recent literature to present the state of the art in customized reconstruction of orbital fractures. Three electronic databases and manual search approaches were used to identify relevant articles. Only studies with a controlled clinical study design were included. Primary outcome was defined as the status of recovery (complete/partial functional and esthetic disturbances). The benefit of intra-surgical navigation should be described. Secondary outcome was defined as the time of surgery, post-surgical events and hospitalization. A total of eight studies out of 552 records identified met the inclusion criteria. Post…
